“The brain is a far more open system than we ever imagined, and nature has gone very far to help us perceive and take in the world around us. It has given us a brain that survives in a changing world by changing itself.”

- Prof Norman Doidge The Brain that Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science

From the day you’re born, to the day you die, your brain and body are changing and adapting to the world around you. This is bioplasticity - your body’s endless capacity to change and adapt.

Every part of your body is subject to bioplastic change. This includes your brain, your nervous, immune and endocrine systems, and your muscles, joints, nerves and connective tissue. The human body is an extraordinary thing: not only do these systems have individual capacity for bioplastic change, but they all work together to create change on a body-wide level. And because all your body systems “speak” to each other, there are a huge number of ways to enact bioplastic change.

Ironically, persisting pain is often a result of the bioplastic nature of the human body. As we age and grow, our body systems get better and better at looking after us. These powerful systems can sometimes become “over tuned” or highly sensitised, sending signals of danger to us even when we are safe.

The good thing is, bioplasticity means we also have the capacity to turn down, or turn off, these danger signals, by moving, thinking and behaving differently.

flip* is built specifically to help you harness your body’s bioplasticity.

flip* is a customisable system designed to help you integrate the science into your everyday life.

“Bioplasticity got you into this situation and bioplasticity can get you out again.”

- Dr David Butler & Prof Lorimer Mosley Explain Pain

Ordinarily your nervous, immune and hormone systems form an invisible safety buffer around you. When these systems are overly sensitised (thanks, bioplasticity!), your safety buffer shrinks. This can manifest in a multitude of ways – not just pain, but also stress, depression, anxiety, gut issues and lots of more subtle physical changes.

Making your safety buffer bigger and stronger helps you tap into your body’s bioplasticity to reduce this heightened sensitivity. The stronger your safety buffer, the more things you can get done without pushing past your flare-up point. This is the principle of graded exposure. Staying below your flare-up point, while gradually increasing how much you’re doing.

This is where flip* comes in.

flip* leverages bioplasticity to expand your safety buffer and let you get back to your desired life, uninhibited by pain.
